Need

The use of opioids for pain relief in pharmacotherapy presents several problems. The potential development of tolerance to its analgesic effects, together with constipation, nausea, sedation, and respiratory depression, is often associated with adverse side effects. However, the most alarming concern is the risk of dependence and addiction, which can lead to misuse, overdose, and long-term health complications. These challenges have become even more pronounced in recent years due to high prescription rates, making opioid-related side effects a major public health problem.

Solution

Neurolux is a wireless battery-free μ-LED implant device that reduces the canonical physiological adverse effects of systemic opioid administration while preserving the full analgesic efficacy of morphine, offering a promising pathway to safer pain treatment. This implantable μ-LED-based photopharmacological system may become a good alternative to intrathecal opioid delivery, currently implemented in a small percentage of all opioid users (1-2%) as it remains limited due to the invasive nature of the treatment, associated costs (i.e., clinical assistance), and potential pre- and postoperative complications.

Goal

To solve the pharmacotherapeutic problems of using opioids.
