Acute myocardial infarction is a serious and frequent illness (in Spain, there is a heart attack every 7 minutes). It is a true medical emergency where the relationship between treatment delay and the risk of death is measured in minutes. The care process for acute myocardial infarction (diagnosis, transfer, and treatment) involves doctors from different specialties and institutions. Achieving perfect coordination between all of them is a challenge and key to avoiding unnecessary delays and ensuring the correct selection of patients. To obtain this perfect coordination, it is necessary to have perfect information channels that do not currently exist in the vast majority of health regions. For this reason, in our health region, one in 3 patients with myocardial infarction receives treatment late, and one in 4 patients are poorly selected (they are not actually a heart attack).
Solution
A group of experts (doctors and nurses) with bioprogrammers developed software called ODISEA (web/APP version) with the aim of improving coordination and information flow between healthcare professionals responsible for patients with acute myocardial infarction. In 2022, a real-life study of the prototype was carried out in our health region, with 11 collaborating institutions and hospitals, more than 500 participating doctors and nurses, and more than 400 patients included. A reduction of 15 minutes in treatment time was observed, and 8% of unnecessary transfers (poorly selected cases) to the hospital specializing in heart attack treatment were avoided. The 15-minute reduction in treatment is medically relevant (reducing the risk of death or disability), and a cost-return study was carried out with the unnecessary transfers avoided, the saving was 231,000 euros/year.
Goal
To develop an application that optimizes coordination and information flow between healthcare professionals to expedite the treatment of acute myocardial infarction.
